Keeping Fit And Staying Healthy At Midlife

The older you get, the more your body, frame, and mind changes. You need to pay attention to these transitions and take the right steps and actions that will support you.

In this article, we will look at different ways to keep fit and stay healthy as you approach midlife or as you navigate through your midlife stages.

Pay Close Attention To Your Diet

Food is a major point of consideration and discussion as you advance in age. The impact of the type of food that you eat at midlife can become very evident within a few days.

I have experimented on myself a few times. For example, I once decided to try a 3-month meal plan with 95% fruits, vegetables, roots and protein and only 5% carbohydrates.

The results were mind blowing for me. Firstly I was able to increase my running/ brisk walking distance by 2km effortlessly. Secondly, I experienced better mental awareness, less fatigue, no more stress headaches, and a better control and feel of my body. Finally, my regular bloating was gone and my stomach went down considerably.

I am not recommending this specific meal plan for you but I am helping you see how food affects you at midlife. You should find a meal plan that works for you and consult your physician, if need be, for proper advice.

Another step I took to improve my nutrition was reducing the quantity of my meals by using a small measuring bowl or plate to portion my meals.

Asides from the clear impact of my new nutrition approaches on my physical frame and mental ability, it also helped me emotionally. I became more relaxed, calm, and happy.

Change Your Wardrobe

Did you know that your wardrobe can affect your health considerably, especially your mental health and well-being.

Personally, when I made a decision to change my usual hard sole shoes to soft comfortable inner sole shoes, I noticed it helped my blood flow. Much more than that, I realised that dressing in a functional, comfortable, and ready-to-go approach made me feel much better and really improved my mental health.

How To Start Your Fitness and Health Journey

As I wrap up this article, I want you to do a small exercise as a practical step to embark on your fitness and health journey at midlife.

1. Stand in front of a mirror and look at yourself.

Who do you see?

Are you happy with the appearance of the person you see?

2. Now, close your eyes and envision the appearance you would like to have.

Write down a detailed description of who you want to see when you look in the mirror (flat tummy, glowing skin, muscular arms, 6-pack etc.)

3. Research and discover all that you need to do to have the appearance you want.

4. Make a plan to achieve all these (e.g. meal plan, exercise schedule, etc.)
