Midlife Career Transitions

At midlife, the likelihood of a career transition becomes magnified. It is one of the encounters that forms the midlife rainbow experience. Oftentimes, people at midlife find themselves at a crossroad in their career that leads to a transition. Career transition is a vital midlife encounter that needs your attention and strategic insights for a smooth progression to the next level.

Career transition is a functional change in job definition, job description, and job focus across industries. It is different from a job change, which is an easy and straightforward process of taking another job within the same job industry, job family, or job definition and job description.

Why is it that at midlife, some individuals feel unfulfilled in their career path?

It starts from the initial stage of choosing a career path.

Here are some common responses to the question, why did you choose this career path?

Do you fall into any of these categories?

  • My parents wanted me to choose this.

  • Most of my friends chose this career.

  • I needed to get a job

  • People in this career path earn a lot of money.

You can vote for more than one answer.

Maybe 1 or 2 or 3, maybe even all these 5 common responses were your response to the question. What next?

First, understand this

“Your life must be to get up and go to play at what you call work. Have a calling for what you do and pursue this work as a personal calling.”

Without this mindset, a day will come when you will wake up and feel like you have wasted time. Developing multiple career paths or career ladders further expands your possibilities and ease of transition.

It’s never too late for you to ask yourself these questions,

  1. What do I have passion for?

  2. What makes me happy?

  3. What is/are my talent(s)?

  4. What are my top skills?

Discover your calling and pursue it wholeheartedly. If you have to make a career transition, begin the process now. Whatever your hand finds to do, it is important to do it well, to develop excellent work habits and a positive legacy.
