If you have not read our post on Midlife Separation
We previously shared the two-part story of Lola and Mofe, a candid exploration of midlife separation. If you missed it, you might want to catch up for context.
Now, let’s continue the conversation.
The post of midlife separation has generated a lot of enquiries and discussions. One of the questions we recorded was trying to differentiate between separation and divorce.
These are three types of disengagement of marriages. First is the voluntary separation without legalities, legal separation and divorce.
Voluntary Separation – Without legal formalities, this type can include trial, temporary, or permanent separation.
Legal Separation – A formal agreement recognized by law but without dissolving the marriage.
Divorce – The legal termination of a marriage.
Separation, whether voluntary or legal, does not dissolve the marriage until legal proceedings are finalized. It often arises when situations or circumstances make it challenging for both parties to continue living together.
Navigating Separation
If you are considering separation, it is crucial to seek professional and spiritual guidance. The road to separation—and potentially divorce—is complex and emotionally charged. Before taking any permanent steps, explore options like trial or temporary separation. These alternatives can provide breathing room for reflection, healing, and possibly reconciliation.
Remember, separation does not grant you the freedom to date, remarry, or engage in romantic relationships unless specific religious or legal exceptions apply. Acting impulsively or under emotional duress often leads to regrettable decisions that complicate reconciliation efforts.
Midlife divorce is a breach of a long-term agreement, it is a break in the forever promise to your partner and family. Divorce is looked at differently across faiths and beliefs. This means it has a strong impact.
